Established in April 1998

Montessori Children’s House Wanaka is an incorporated society and charitable trust and as such is a not for profit organisation conveniently located on Kings Drive between Wanaka Primary and Holy Family School. Our school is run solely for the benefit of the community. We aim for our income to just cover the costs of running the school and if we make any surplus during any given year this is reinvested in the school. Our first location licensed for 23 children was Warren Street in a converted bach. It was 5 years later as a result of high demand for places and through grants from Central Lakes, Community Trust of Otago and the Ministry alongside countless hours of fundraising we opened our purpose built facility on Kings Drive in June 2003. Our present licence allows us to take up to 56 children spanning 2 classrooms in any one session.

We have a strong foundation in Dr Maria Montessori’s philosophy and, through our ‘prepared environment’, we provide unique learning programmes that incorporate all aspects of traditional Montessori methods while meeting the strands and learning outcomes of the Early Childhood Curriculum Document Te Whariki. The School is a MANZ (Montessori Aotearoa of New Zealand) Member School, with an extensive range of specialised Montessori teaching materials. There is also a Parent Library collection of reading materials that highlight Montessori methods, practice and philosophy.
