Project Description

In this classroom there are a maximum of 14 children per session with 3 qualified teaching staff each day and an additional support teacher. Minimum attendance in the Bambini classroom is two sessions per week.

The Bambini environment contains specially designed, manipulative materials for development that support and invite children to engage in learning activities of their own individual choice. The children are given freedom to make their own choices and take control of their own learning. Our safe and purposefully prepared environment allows time and uninterrupted space for the children to try out and perfect their skills. The Montessori materials are aimed to support and foster the young child’s independence, confidence and love of learning. Everything in the environment is proportionate to the child’s size and is designed to be safe and aesthetically pleasing for children.

Opportunities for movement and independence, along with the development of spoken language form the curriculum for this class. Group activities such as singing and stories provide young children with the experience of belonging to a community.
Food preparation and outdoor play provide a framework to encourage social development. Through his or her chosen activity, the child’s concentration and self-confidence grow.

Children are given opportunities to work in the development of language skills, art, music, sensorial and practical life. The practical life area is particularly emphasized as the activities in this area give children the chance to develop skills to care for themselves and their environment in the following areas: control of movement, grace and courtesy.
Building the child’s self-esteem is the ultimate goal and this is accomplished through repeated successes with these activities.

Through song and dance and freedom of choice, the child has access to a variety of large muscle activities that offer them opportunities to jump, climb, balance, crawl or skip. These exercises as well as creative art activities, are offered for each child to choose.

The transition up to the Kea / Kiwis class
Progression to the next class is based partly on age but also on an evaluation of the child’s total academic, social, emotional, and physical/motor development. It is important to bear in mind that each class can individually tailor the child’s program to a large degree, so they will not be disadvantaged if they stay in a class a little longer. The most important criteria for advancement to an older group is often the child’s social adjustment, independence, work habits, and maturity. Generally, children progress to the next classroom around 2 years 6 -8 months. We invite parents to work with us in reaching these decisions, and focus on what will be in the child’s best interests.
